'Stranger on the Shore' - The
Phenomenon:
'Stranger on the Shore' topped the charts (UK and US) in 1962 and in the
process not only broke records around the world, but became one of the
successful singles of all time.
'Stranger on the Shore' reached Number One in the UK in 1962, remained in
the charts for 55-weeks, and became the biggest-selling single of the year.
Today it remains in the UK's all-time best selling singles chart and is also
the biggest-selling instrumental single of all time.
Meanwhile, in the US it became the first British recording to reach Number
One on the US Billboard Hot 100. It also claims the record of being the
first-ever single to be Number One similtaeously in both the UK and US.
Since that time Acker and his Paramount Jazz Band have firmly established
themselves as one of the most successful and best loved British jazz bands
of all time. In additional to his many awards, Acker has been awarded an
MBE for his services to the music industry.
